What is it?
You can reach new subscribers by republishing your newsletter articles as Medium posts, or writing fresh content specifically for the platform.
There are two main ways this happens:
- Medium ranks well on Google, so posting your content there gives you extra visibility in search results.
- Getting featured on Medium's homepage or a popular topic page can drive a surge of new readers to your work.
Once you've hooked your readers, it's easy to display an email capture form on your article page - or even make it mandatory to subscribe to read the full article.
The Good and the Bad
Examples of how to crush it
Lenny's Newsletter
Lenny started by writing posts on Medium, sharing ideas and lessons from his time at Airbnb.
One of his early posts went viral, getting 29,000 "claps" and was even shared by Airbnb's CEO.
While he initially didn't intend to start a newsletter, his friend Andrew Chen advised him to "double down" on the traction.
So Lenny went back to those popular past posts on Medium and added a simple line at the bottom letting readers know about his new newsletter.
Those initial Medium posts and the sign-up link he added helped kickstart his email list with the first 100 or so subscribers.
He now has over 677,000 - so you could say it has worked out pretty well!
The Spark
Ev Chapman is creative entrepreneur with a newsletter teaching 1200 readers how to start online businesses.
Over the last month she’s started sharing her newsletter content on Medium, and it’s helped her gain extra exposure for her work.
She just directly copy-and-pastes the newsletter content a day after it's sent to her list, so it's a low-lift activity to acquire extra eyeballs.
